Introduction to Arthur Joseph Goldberg

Arthur Joseph Goldberg (1908-90), American statesman and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. Goldberg was born in Chicago on August 8, 1908, and educated at Northwestern University, where he received his law degree. A labor lawyer, he became general counsel to the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1948 and to the industrial union department of the newly merged American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1955. In 1961 he was appointed secretary of labor by President John F. Kennedy, and in 1962 to the Supreme Court. He resigned from the bench in 1965 to become the U.S. representative to the United Nations, but gave up this post in 1968. In 1970 he was the unsuccessful Democratic Party candidate for governor of New York State. Equal Justice, Goldberg’s story of the Supreme Court, was published in 1972.” (1)
