Practical Information

Note: Some of this information was last updated in 1982

Auxiliary; subordinate. The term ancillary letters is used to apply to letters testamentary or letters of administration that are taken out in a state other than that of the decedent’s domicile, but in which he or she had assets or debts. These letters are subordinate or supplementary to the letters issued in the decedent’s domicile. The term ancillary also applies to court proceedings that are auxiliary to the main action for example, a bill of discovery is ancillary to the principal action.
