Abadengo Definition
In Spanish law. Lands, towns, and villages belonging to an abbot, and under his jurisdiction. All lands belonging to ecclesiastical corporations, and as such exempt from taxation. Escriche, Die. Raz. Lands of this kind were usually held in mortmain, arid hence a law was enacted declaring that no land liable to taxation could be given to ecclesiastical institutions “ningun realengo non pase a abadengo,” which is repeatedly insisted on.
