When the researcher knows the public law number, he or she is able to retrieve a legislative history for that law.

List of Public Law Numbers Definition

Public laws are assigned sequential numbers within a Congress. They are different from Statutes at Large Numbers, since the later is a compilation of legislation passed and signed into law during each session of Congress (there is a volume for each Congress). In the case of the Enacted Bill Number, the Bills are assigned sequential numbers in accordance with its introduction in the Congress.
