Something of value, easily converted into cash, deposited as a pledge with a lender to secure the repayment of a loan; its value is usually substantially more than the amount of the loan. If the borrower is unable to meet the loan when due, the lender is free to sell the collateral and collect the debt from the proceeds of the sale.
